How to reduce the impact of construction on the environment

The construction industry faces an increasingly urgent challenge: minimizing the environmental impacts generated by its activities, which are responsible for one-fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

To achieve this, effective and innovative actions must be implemented to make the sector more sustainable, contributing to the mitigation of climate change and the building of a greener future.

1. Map the impacts accurately

Thoroughly assess the environmental impacts of each stage of the project, from material extraction to the final disposal of waste. Quantify the impacts based on accurate data, such as water consumption, energy usage, and GHG emissions.

2. Adopt green building practices with a focus on materials

Prioritize certified and locally sourced materials to reduce deforestation, emissions, and transportation. Use FSC® certified wood,®recycled concrete, ecological bricks, and biodegradable materials.

3. Reduce, reuse, and recycle efficiently

Implement a comprehensive waste management program with segregation, reuse, and recycling. Train workers on sustainability principles and optimize processes with tools such as BIM.

4. Optimize water use with a focus on technology

Implement rainwater reuse systems, use efficient equipment, and monitor consumption to reduce waste. Encourage rainwater harvesting for landscaping and aquifer recharge.

5. Manage energy efficiently with a focus on renewable energy

Install solar panels, use efficient equipment, and monitor energy consumption to reduce costs and emissions. Prioritize electric and hybrid vehicles, encourage the use of bicycles, and implement bike lanes on construction sites.

6. Minimize greenhouse gas emissions with strategic actions

Plan optimized transportation routes, implement intelligent logistics systems, and offset unavoidable emissions with certified projects. Encourage research and development of low environmental impact materials and technologies.

7. Adopt a sustainability culture with engagement

Invest in training and awareness programs to raise workers' awareness about the importance of sustainability. Communicate clearly the company's sustainability initiatives and encourage employee participation. Lead by example, demonstrate genuine commitment to sustainable practices, and create open communication channels.

8. Seek environmental certifications with international recognition

Obtain certifications such as LEED, AQUA-HABITAT, and ISO 14001 to demonstrate the company's commitment to environmental responsibility.

By implementing these actions, the construction industry can significantly contribute to building a greener and more sustainable future for all.
